Dear Friends and Neighbors,
 |
I was joined last week by the mentor
organization Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Here’s Marit Carlson-Van Dort
with her “Little,” Amber.
|
It continues to be a lively session on Capitol Hill. Into our third week, we’ve had a few special guests in the building to break up our normal routine. Students from around the state visited Juneau this week participating in the Close-Up program and learning about our state government. We also had a visit from Big Brothers Big Sisters in honor of National Mentoring Month. Engaging our youth in government is fun and benefits the state in the long run.
Stan Price Wildlife Sanctuary bill hearing
Admiralty Island west of Juneau is called Kootznoowoo, meaning Fortress of the Bear, by Alaska Natives. Visitors can catch a glimpse into this wild place at Pack Creek, first designated as a special bear viewing area in 1934. In 1984, the Board of Game, recognizing the importance of protecting the Pack Creek bears, habituated to human presence, placed adjoining areas off limits to bear hunting. These lands deserve to be permanently included in the bear viewing area, now known as the Stan Price State Wildlife Sanctuary. I was proud to present Senate Bill 104, first introduced by former Senator Kim Elton, to the Senate Resources Committee this week. I am happy to co-sponsor this bill.
Southeast Energy Intertie
Access to affordable and renewable energy for all Alaskans continues to be a hot topic in the Legislature. Southeast Alaska marked a significant achievement in expanding its energy infrastructure when a large electrical transmission project came online in Southern Southeast. The Swan-Tyee intertie links Ketchikan’s Swan Lake hydroelectric project to the Tyee Lake project near Petersburg and Wrangell. This 57-mile line allows surplus energy from Tyee communities to connect into Ketchikan’s power system. The intertie segment advances a regional effort to interconnect hydropower.
Southeast Mayors
In conjunction with the Alaska Municipal League’s legislative meetings, I met with many of the Southeast mayors this week. It was great to get together. The Southeast legislative delegation agreed to continue communication and cooperation with communities in our region.

Thanks to these community members for
helping make Juneau a great place to live!
Marine Exchange receives award from U.S. Coast Guard
Coast Guard Rear Admiral Christopher Colvin presented the Meritorious Public Service Award to the Marine Exchange of Alaska this week, recognizing the organization for their industry stewardship. Marine Exchange provides real time vessel tracking which supports environmental protection, marine rescue, and shipping safety. Kudos goes to Ed Page, Brett Farrell, Bill Benning, Steve Lanwermeyer, John Adams, Tor Wallen, Don Bodron, Chris Watson, Ed Henry, Rick Sypeck, Leo DeMeo, and Kenneth Wetzel.
Juneau school kids raise money for Haiti
Juneau school kids and teachers from around the district are finding creative and educational ways to raise money for Haiti. Ceramic ‘houses for Haiti’ will be sold this weekend at Thunder Mountain High School’s Arts for Kids and Mendenhall River Community School students are offering chore services for donations. Kudos to all those students and teachers, and other community members for rallying behind Haiti relief!
