Boosters and Begich and AG, oh my!

SB 72 signed into law

Last week, I was thrilled to see Governor Palin sign SB 72. Over the past 3 years, my staff and I have worked hard on this important piece of legislation, which puts USDOT National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommendations in statute, clarifying for law enforcement officials which devices are required for proper child restraint.  The bill makes Alaska eligible for $200,000 in federal funds to help purchase booster seats for low income families. Extra thanks goes to Rep. Lindsey Holmes for shepherding the “Booster Seat Bill” through the House, and constituent Gordon Glaser for bringing this issue to my attention a few years ago.

Salmon in the City

I joined U.S. Senator Mark Begich and other local park advocates for a dedication of the new Westchester Creek overlook, designed to help reintroduce a small salmon run up Chester Creek. The overlook, located at Westchester lagoon, completes years of planning and is a welcome addition to West Anchorage.

Meeting the “Other Dan Sullivan”

I also had the pleasure of meeting Governor Palin’s new Attorney General, Daniel S. Sullivan.  During the hour-long meeting, we discussed a broad range of topics, including gasline issues on the horizon, public safety and reducing sex assaults rates. I found him to be articulate and thoughtful, and look forward to getting to know him better during the confirmation process next year.

Takin’ it to the streets!

Finally, today I joined fellow legislators and community leaders in a little bit of rabble rousing regarding the roads in Anchorage. As many of you have noticed-- and wrote my office to tell me -- the state maintained roads in Anchorage have been in bad condition this summer, remaining full of gravel and ash even as we head into July. This morning, we got out the brooms and shovels to show that a few motivated citizens can clean things up.

Thanks to those who came out during a very dusty, but productive lunch hour!

As usual, please don’t hesitate to call with questions and concerns.

Yours truly,
