(FAIRBANKS) – Senator Joe Thomas (D-Fairbanks) will be welcoming his colleagues from the Senate Finance Committee to Fairbanks this week. The seven-member committee, as well as Senate President Gary Stevens (R-Kodiak), will be holding a two-day meeting at UAF with members of the university administration to discuss funding issues. A community reception on Wednesday, October 14 from 5-7 pm at the Morris Thompson Center will allow local residents to interact with members of the committee. “I’m very pleased that the members of the Finance Committee are taking the extraordinary step of meeting in Fairbanks to get a greater understanding of our community and the issues we face,” said Senator Joe Thomas. “With the committee members coming from all corners of the state, I’m looking forward to sharing some of the opportunities and challenges facing Interior Alaska in the coming years.” Attending the Fairbanks hearings will be Senate President Gary Stevens (R-Kodiak) and Senate Finance Committee Co-Chairmen Senators Bert Stedman (R-Sitka) and Lyman Hoffman (D-Bethel). Other members of the committee attending are Senators Donny Olson (D-Golovin), Charlie Huggins (R-Wasilla), Dennis Egan (D-Juneau), Johnny Ellis (D-Anchorage) and Joe Thomas. Senator Thomas invites members of the local community to attend a reception with the members of the committee at the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center on Wednesday, October 14 from 5-7 pm. “I’m unaware of the Finance Committee ever convening in Fairbanks,” stated Senator Thomas. “We have a unique opportunity to advocate for our community, our way of life and the future of Interior Alaska.” For more information, contact Senator Thomas or Joe Hardenbrook at 907-456-8161. ###
