Senate Leadership Announces New Committee Assignments
Egan to Replace Elton on Finance Committee; Meyer, Thomas to Co-Chair Education Committee
(ANCHORAGE) – The Senate Committee on Committees, which assigns Senators to committees, met today in Anchorage and filled seats left empty by the resignation of former Senator Kim Elton (D-Juneau). Senator Elton’s appointed successor, Senator Dennis Egan (D-Juneau), who took office on the last day of the 2009 legislative session, will replace Elton on the Finance Committee. “We are pleased that Senator Egan is willing to serve on the Finance Committee, which requires a lot of time and hard work on a wide range of legislative issues,” said Senate President Gary Stevens, Chairman of the Committee on Committees. “He will continue to give Juneau the kind of hands-on representation on that important committee that Senator Elton provided.” Here is the complete list of committee assignments made today: EDUCATION COMMITTEE Senator Kevin Meyer (R-Anchorage) replaces Senator Elton as a member, and Senator Joe Thomas (D-Fairbanks) will be added to the committee. Senators Meyer and Thomas will serve as Co-chairs. Senator Elton had been chairman before his resignation. FINANCE COMMITTEE Senator Egan replaces Senator Elton as a member. JUDICIARY COMMITTEE Senator Egan replaces Senator Elton as a member. RULES COMMITTEE Senate Majority Leader Johnny Ellis (D-Anchorage) replaces Senator Elton as a member. Senator Elton resigned on March 2nd to take a position representing Alaska at the U.S. Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C., and Governor Sarah Palin appointed Senator Egan to fill his term on April 19th. In addition to Senator Stevens, the members of the Committee on Committees are Senators Ellis, Lyman Hoffman (D-Bethel), Charlie Huggins (R-Mat-Su) and Bert Stedman (R-Sitka). The committee typically meets soon after the opening of a new legislature to appoint members to all other committees.
